The hotel at the door to Kananaskis
An independent guide for people who come for the mountains and need a bed at the bottom of them. I map the trails, the drives and the rooms around one hotel, and our desk can ask for a room on your dates.
Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino sits where the Trans-Canada Highway meets Highway 40, the road that runs south into Kananaskis Country. It stands on Stoney Nakoda land, it has 100 rooms and suites by its own count, and its casino describes itself as the only one in the Canadian Rockies. Most write-ups lead with that casino. This one leads with the junction, because the junction is the reason a hiker, a skier or a driver ends up here.
From the front door, the Kananaskis Visitor Information Centre at Barrier Lake is 7.1 km away and Barrier Dam, start of the Prairie View climb, is 9.2 km. Canmore is 33 km west, Banff about 56 km. Those are calc figures from a routing tool, not the hotel's brochure; the hotel itself says it is 45 minutes west of Calgary. Everything on this site comes with its source, and when a source is missing I say so instead of filling the gap.
Distances that decide the trip
| Place | From the hotel | Why go |

| Heart Creek, Lac des Arcs | 14.7 km · ~14 min | Short canyon walk over seven bridges to a waterfall |
| Kananaskis Village | 26.7 km · ~27 min | Troll Falls, Village Loop, Wedge Pond |
| Canmore, Main Street | 33.0 km · ~27 min | Grassi Lakes, Ha Ling, a town to eat in |
| Banff, Banff Avenue | 56.2 km · ~47 min | National park admission applies |
| Calgary City Hall | 75.0 km · ~62 min | The hotel quotes 45 minutes west of Calgary |
| Calgary International Airport (YYC) | 82.9 km · ~74 min | No scheduled transit found to the resort |
“calc” = my own OSRM router check from the resort’s map pin, 31 October 2026: no traffic, stops or snow.

What the hotel actually gives you

The rooms come in six types, and the four standard types each come in a Mountain View and a Valley View version; the hotel's Valley View pages promise sunrise. Every room, per the resort's about page, has high-speed Wi-Fi, a security safe, a 47-inch TV, a mini fridge and a microwave. Room pages add a shower and soaker tub, a desk, coffee and tea, an iron, a hair dryer and individual air conditioning. Sizes are not published anywhere I could find.
- Heated indoor pool with a waterslide and a hot tub, 9 am to 11 pm, included for resort guests.
- A small gym: free weights, a stationary bike, a treadmill and yoga mats.
- Free parking, and free RV and truck parking if you register at the front desk.
- The Ridge restaurant (8 am to 9 pm) and Sidelines lounge (10 am to 2 am).
- Check-in 4:00 pm, check-out 11:00 am, per the resort's events package and house rules.
- Pets in a limited number of rooms, $25 per night per pet, two at most.
Room by room: all six room types. The pool after a long day: pool and gym.
My short verdict
If your day is spent on the east side of Kananaskis or in the Bow Valley, this is a practical base: you are on the highway before the Canmore traffic, ten minutes from Barrier Lake, and the pool is there when you come down. If you want a village to walk around in the evening, or more than two places to eat, you will be driving to Canmore. The casino is part of the building; if that is not your thing, it is still easy to treat this as a hotel with a waterslide at the bottom of a mountain road. The longer reasoning, with what to weigh, is on the verdict page.
The map
The Google map is not loaded until you ask for it, so nothing is sent to Google just by opening this page.
Open in Google Maps · Directions to the resort
Address as the resort prints it: 888 Nakoda Way, Mînî Thnî, Alberta T0L 1N0. Mînî Thnî is the Nakoda name of Morley. On the highway you are looking for the junction of Highway 1 and Highway 40.
How the room request works
You tell our desk your dates, how many people and which room type, using the form on any page. The desk checks availability and the rate with the hotel's own booking or with a booking partner, then answers by email. We never ask for a card and a request is not a booking until the hotel confirms it. If a stay is confirmed through us, the hotel or the booking partner pays us a commission. You pay nothing to us. The full explanation is on funding and bookings; the hotel's own site is stoneynakodaresort.com.
